Intensive Summer Spanish Language and Cultural Institute

Study abroad and learn from experts in the field of Spanish language education. Santillana USA has

partnered with the University of Alcalá in Spain, world renowned for its Spanish course, to create a

one-week study abroad opportunity for U.S. Spanish teachers.

• Attend language and cultural sessions at the University of Alcalá de Henares designed to enhance

linguistic, cultural, historical, and sociological knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures.

• Participate in cultural activities such as educational tours to historical and cultural sites; e.g. travel through

“La ruta del Quijote,” visit Miguel de Cervantes’s home, and the Museo del Prado, among others.

• Experience Spanish culture first-hand by spending time with Spanish families and locals, sampling Spanish

cuisine and many other aspects of Spanish daily life.

• Receive an official Certification of Completion from the University of Alcalá.

all levels of instruction. From targeted professional development workshops to technical assistance,

including school and district-wide program evaluations, CAL can customize a solution to best

meet needs and budget with a particular focus on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for

Languages Other Than English. Workshops can be customized, whether focusing on the STAAR

Spanish assessment, facilitating various statewide initiatives including implementation of the TEKS

LOTE, or providing state-of-the art resources on curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Research-Based Best Practices for LOTE Teachers

Participants will explore best practices for developing standards-based and thematically organized

curricula that integrate language, culture, and content to help students develop high levels of

language proficiency.

Incorporating the Target Language into All Instruction: A Hands-on Workshop

With the goal of using the target language 90–100% of the time in the classroom, participants will

learn a variety of strategies to make language comprehensible, monitor student comprehension,

and make adjustments to instruction as needed. Verbal and non-verbal strategies will be

encouraged to avoid use of English by teachers or students.

Fostering Spanish Language and Literacy Development

Participants learn effective methodologies for teaching academic language and literacy in Spanish

in a variety of educational settings where Spanish is the language of instruction.

Language Assessment in the 21st Century Classroom: Practical Tools for

Teachers

Guided by CAL’s decades of experience in language assessment, participants will engage with

formative and summative assessments and identify effective assessment tools and techniques

that will support and enhance instruction in their classrooms.
